Dodd-Berry, Ege finish tied for fourth
NORTHFIELD, Ill. (Sept. 24, 2023) – The ETSU men's golf team went low on Tuesday, but the 18th-ranked Buccaneers still couldn't catch the leader as the Blue & Gold finished runner-up at the Windon Memorial, which concluded play on Tuesday from Sunset Ridge Country Club.
The Bucs fired a 10-under 274 in the finale as ETSU finished 34-under-par 818 for the tournament only to be edged out by Big Ten power Purdue for the team title. The Boilermakers, who shot 7-under 268 on Tuesday, finished at 38-under-par 818. The 818 set a new tournament record, which was also previously set by Purdue in 2015. The next closest team to the Bucs was Indiana as they placed third at 29-under-par 823
ETSU made its work on the par-5s as they generated a tournament-best 30-under-par on those holes, while also pacing the 15-team field with 69 birdies over the two-day, 54-hole event.
Individually, Matty Dodd-Berry (Wirral, England) and Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) finished tied for fourth at 10-under-par 203. The Buccaneer duo both posted a 2-under 69 on Tuesday. Dodd-Berry led the field with 18 birdies and Ege was right behind with 17.
Purdue's Herman Sekne earned medalist honors as he finished at 16-under-par 197 to win by four strokes over Indiana's Drew Saylers. Sekne's 16-under-par 197 shattered the previous 54-hole tournament low of 205, set by UC Davis' Thomas Hutchinson in 2018. Fellow Hoosier Cole Starnes placed third at 11-under-par 202.
Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) carded a 2-under 69 in the final round to move into the top-10. Kleen placed tied for ninth at 7-under-par 206. Archie Davies (Carlisle, England) led the Blue & Gold on Tuesday as he fired a 4-under 67 and finished tied for 24th at 4-under-par 209. Davies finished with four birdies and 14 pars on Tuesday.
The Bucs will now gear up for their home tournament, the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, which gets underway Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough.
