Bucs sit in second place at Windon Memorial

Dodd-Berry, Ege pace Blue & Gold in Chicago; Chartier in the hunt at JT Poston Invitational

NORTHFIELD, Ill. & SAPPHIRE, N.C. (Sept. 25, 2023) – Thanks to stellar play by Matty Dodd-Berry (Wirral, England) and Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway), the ETSU men's golf team sits in second-place following the first two rounds of the Windon Memorial, which got underway on Monday from Sunset Ridge Country Club. Meanwhile, down in North Carolina, Remi Chartier (Montreal, Canada) sits two shots off the lead after posting an 8-under-par 134 through the first 36 holes at the JT Poston Invitational. 

In Chicago, the 18th-ranked Buccaneers totaled a 24-under-par 544 over the first two rounds and trail Big Ten power Purdue by seven shots. The Boilermakers opened with a 15-under 269 in round one to sit atop the leaderboard and kept their spot on the post with a 16-under 268 in round two. The Bucs started with 10-under 274 before closing the day with a 14-under 270 to move into second. ETSU is sandwiched between Big Ten foes as Indiana and tournament host Northwestern are tied for third at 22-under-par 546. 

As a team, ETSU dominated the par-5s as they played the holes at 22-under-par and tallied a tournament-best 49 birdies in the two rounds on Monday. 

Dodd-Berry and Ege shot identical scores in both rounds on Monday. The Buccaneer scoring duo began the day with a 3-under 68 before closing with a blistering 5-under 66 in round two. Dodd-Berry and Ege are both tied for fifth at 8-under-par 134 and only sit two shots off the lead. In round two, both Buccaneers tallied six birdies, 11 pars and one bogey to get into contention. Dodd-Berry – who started on hole No. 12 – carded four straight birdies from No. 4-7, while Ege – who opened up on No. 9 – birdied six of his final 11 holes to finish with the 66. 

Over the 36 holes, Ege collected 13 birdies, which is tied for the lead, while Dodd-Berry posted 12. 

Indiana's Drew Salyers and Purdue's Herman Sekne are both tied for the lead at 10-under-par 132, while North Florida's Robbie Higgins and Northwestern's Ethan Tseng are tied for third at 9-under-par 133. 

Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) – who led the Bucs in round one with a 4-under 67 – is tied for 17th at 5-under-par 137. Redshirt freshman Jenson Forrester (Wolverhampton, England) had a flawless second round as he generated three birdies and 15 pars to jump 14 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 29th at 3-under-par 139. 

The Bucs will be paired with Purdue and Indiana in Tuesday's final round, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m. ET.

JT POSTON INVITATIONAL

In North Carolina, Remi Chartier is one of three Bucs playing as an individual at the JT Poston Invitational, which is being held at Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, N.C. 

Chartier is tied for second after 36 holes of competition at 8-under-par 134. The Buccaneer graduate student opened the day with a 6-under 65 in round one and closed with a 2-under 69 in the second round. In the opener, Chartier closed the round by birdying four of his final five holes. Overall, Chartier produced seven birdies, 10 pars and one bogey in the opening round. 

Chartier and Appalachian State's Addison Beam are chasing Xavier's Carson Bellish. Bellish holds the lead at 10-under-par 132. 

Chartier leads the 100-player field in par-4 scoring at 7-under, while his 10 birdies are tied for the seventh-most. 

Ben Carberry (Bonnybridge, Scotland) is in the top-25 as he's tied for 23rd at 1-under-par 141. 

Tuesday's final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
