CHARLESTON, S.C. (Nov. 10, 2023) – The ETSU volleyball team battled but ultimately fell on the road at The Citadel on Friday afternoon in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14).
Stat Standouts – ETSU was led offensively by the tandem of
Brianna Cantrell and
Amanda Lowe as both players totaled 16 kills. Setting up Cantrell, Lowe and the rest of the Buccaneer offense was
Malgorzata Andersohn. Andersohn finished with 28 assists and a career-high 23 digs for her 16
th double-double of the 2023 campaign. Defensively,
Jasmal Cruz (12 digs) and
Melanie Morris (11 digs) also finished with double-digit dig totals.
Set 1 – The opening set of Friday's match was a competitive one. The score between the Bucs and Bulldogs was tied at 12 different points in the opening frame. Following a kill from
Whitley Rammel, the Buccaneers held a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. However, a 4-0 run by The Citadel swung momentum back to the home team. The Bucs got back within a point at 18-17 but that's as close as they would come to the Bulldogs as The Citadel claimed the first stanza, 25-22.
Set 2 – The second frame was a back-and-forth battle as well. A kill by
Jenna Forster jumpstarted a 4-0 run for ETSU that gave the Bucs a lead late in the frame. It was another kill by Forster to give ETSU a set point opportunity, 24-22. A kill by the Bulldogs briefly made the score 24-23 before a service error gave the Bucs the set, 25-23.
Set 3 – After nearly having as many attack errors as kills in the second (10 to 13), The Citadel rebounded in the third. Collectively, the Bulldogs had a .318 hitting percentage with 18 kills. ETSU, meanwhile, finished the frame with 15 kills and a .268 attack percentage. Those three extra kills from The Citadel proved to be the difference in a 25-22 set win for the Bulldogs.
Set 4 – The Citadel jumped on the Bucs right out of the gate in the fourth set. The Bulldogs scored the first five points to force ETSU to take a timeout. Rammel notched a kill to bring ETSU within three points, 12-9. Unfortunately, the Bucs did not get closer than that as The Citadel went on to take the fourth frame and clinch the match, 25-14.
Next Up – ETSU, now 5-21 overall and 5-10 in SoCon play, will close out the regular season Saturday evening at Wofford. First serve for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
