ETSU fires 17-under 267; Bucs sit five shots off the lead at Ka'anapali Classic
LAHAINA, Hawaii (Oct. 27, 2023) – It was moving day at the Ka'anapali Classic on Friday and the ninth-ranked Buccaneers climbed up the leaderboard.
ETSU went low with a 17-under 267 in round two and closed the gap on Liberty as the Blue & Gold enter Saturday's final round five shots off the lead. The Bucs are tied for second with Oklahoma at 29-under-par 539.
Liberty still leads the field at 34-under-par 534.
All five Buccaneers shot below par on Friday with
Mats Ege leading the charge as he carded a 7-under 64 en route to moving into a tie for first at 12-under-par 130. Ege began the day with three straight birdies and played the front nine at five-under. The only blemish on the day came on the par-4, 454-yard No. 10 where Ege posted a bogey; however, he went birdie-birdie on No. 11 and No. 12 to regain momentum. Following three consecutive pars, Ege birdied the par-4, 16th to finish the day with a 64.
Ege is tied for the lead with Liberty's Josh Ryan, while two golfers are one shot back at 11-under-par.
Remi Chartier and
Matty Dodd-Berry both registered a 3-under 68 to move into a tie for 19th at 5-under-par 137, while
Algot Kleen totaled a 4-under 67. Kleen is tied for 24th at 4-under-par 138.
Overall, the Bucs bagged 27 birdies on Friday and now have 47 for the tournament. The Blue & Gold lead the field in par-5 scoring (-20).
ETSU will be grouped with Liberty, Oklahoma and North Florida in Saturday's final round. The teams tee off with a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. ET.
