Kleen wins Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate

Kleen finishes tournament at 11-under-par 205

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Oct. 15, 2023) – ETSU's Algot Kleen is bringing home some hardware from the Peach State.

Kleen earned a share of the individual title at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate by finishing with a 54-hole score of 11-under-par 205. Kleen, who recorded his second career victory, finished tied with UCLA's Omar Morales. The Buccaneer junior held a one-shot lead as he stood at the No. 18 tee box, but Kleen bogeyed the par-5, 564-yard final hole. Kleen was flawless up to the that point in the final round as he had three birdies and 14 pars, but the one blemish resulted him in dropping the shot to finish tied with Morales.

The 11th-ranked Buccaneers were looking to making it a clean sweep as they carried a six-shot lead into Sunday's final round. However, ETSU finished third at 16-under-par 848. The Blue & Gold recorded a 1-over 289 in the final round of the tournament and couldn't hold off a surging Virginia team.

The 25th-ranked Cavaliers fired a tournament record 19-under 269 on Sunday to jump three teams up the leaderboard for the win. Virginia finished at 25-under-par 839 and won by six strokes over host and No. 12 Georgia Tech and by nine shots over the Bucs.

ETSU, who has played in all 17 of these tournaments, posted its best finish on Sunday. The Bucs' previous best result was seventh in 2007. Prior to Kleen's win, ETSU's top individual finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate was Archie Davies' sixth-place showing in 2021.

Mats Ege finished tied for fifth as he totaled an 8-under-par 208. Ege posted his second straight 2-under 70 to close out the tournament. Ege has finished in the top-10 in all four tournaments this season and now has 17 top-10 finishes for his career.

For the weekend, Kleen and Ege led the tournament in birdies as they combined for 33. Kleen tallied 17 and Ege totaled 16. As a team, ETSU registered 56 birdies and led the field in par-5 scoring at 22-under.

The Bucs conclude their fall season out in Hawaii as ETSU plays in the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational from Oct. 26-28.
