ETSU, Wofford to meet Saturday at Greene Stadium

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2023) – For the second straight weekend, the ETSU football is at home as the Buccaneers bring Wofford to town on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Bank of Tennessee Field at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium.

ARNOLD MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKS
ETSU junior safety Sheldon Arnold II has earned the last two SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors … Two weeks ago at Samford, Arnold totaled seven solo tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions and one fumble recovery against the Bulldogs … The Bucs scored touchdowns on each of Arnold's two interceptions in the second quarter … Then, last week vs. Mercer, Arnold tied a career high with 12 tackles, added 2.5 TFLs, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery … Arnold became the first SoCon player to win back-to-back Defensive Player of the Week honors since Buccaneer linebacker Donovan Manuel accomplished the feat in 2021 … ETSU has had seven SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors since the start of the 2021 season.
 
BUCS IN THE FCS RANKINGS 
Teddy Wilson ranks second nationally with his three blocked punts and Sheldon Arnold II ranks third with his two fumble recoveries … Nate Brackett ranks 10th nationally in punting as he's averaging 44.7 yards per punt … Brackett's 70-yard punt against Carson-Newman is tied for the sixth-longest among FCS players this season … Sheldon Arnold II is 22nd in interceptions per game (0.4), 31st in solo tackles per game (5.2), 44th in total tackles per game (8.4) and 45th in tackles for loss per game (1.2) … Chris Hope is 29th in solo tackles (5.4) … Stephen Scott ranks 31st in total tackles (9.0), Bryson Irby is 50th in rushing touchdowns (4) and Ewan Johnson is 46th in field goal percentage (.667).
 
CLOSE CALLS IN CONFERENCE 
ETSU has played in 56 SoCon games since rejoining the league in 2016 with the Bucs record being 23-33 in those contests … Thirty-six of those games have been decided by one possession (8 points or less) with 14 being decided by three points or less … ETSU is being outscored 1,546 to 1,353 in those previous 56 games, breaking down to 27.6 points to 24.2 points per contest (differential of 193 points) … Furthermore, since 2018, ETSU is 19-21 in league play with 29 of those 40 games being decided by one possession (8 points or less) and 11 by three points or less … The Bucs are being outscored by their opponents 1,079 to 1,057 (during this stretch, breaking down to 27.0 points to 26.4 points … In addition, four of those last 40 SoCon games have gone to overtime … To go even further, when looking at ETSU's spring 2021 and fall 2021 games, the Bucs went 11-3 overall with 13 of those 14 games being decided by one possession (8 points or less) … The Bucs won the SoCon title in the 2018 and 2021. 
 
PERSONAL MILESTONES
A pair of Buccaneers reached personal milestones at Austin Peay as linebackers Zach West and Stephen Scott notched their 100th career tackles … Zach West landed right on the number with his two hits against the Govs, while Stephen Scott – who posted a career-high 12 tackles at Austin Peay – has 123 for his career … Chris Hope and Sheldon Arnold II both registered their 100th career tackles against Mercer … Hope entered that game with 99 and now has 105 career hits, while Arnold need 12 to land on the milestone … The Buccaneer defensive back tied his career high with 12 hits against the Bears to land right at 100 … Max Evans is four tackles away from registering his 100th career tackle. 
 
HUZZIE REACHES THE 2K MARK 
Speaking of personal milestones, ETSU redshirt senior wide receiver Will Huzie made history in the Bucs' win over Carson-Newman as he became just the third Buccaneer receiver to eclipse the 2,000 receiving yard mark for a career … Huzzie has now totaled 2,110 receiving yards in 43 career games with the Bucs … B.J. Adigun (1994-97) is the all-time Buccaneer leader with 2,802 receiving yards and Cecil Moore (1999-02) is second with 2,488 yards … Huzzie also has 160 receptions, which rank third all-time … Huzzie needs two catches to pass Moore for second and 13 catches to break B.J. Adigun's school record of 172 … In his 43 games played, Huzzie has posted 17 touchdown receptions … The Duluth, Ga. native needs two more touchdown catches to move into the top three Buccaneer leaders and 10 to break Adigun's record of 26. 
 
ABOUT WOFFORD
  • Wofford has dropped its first six games to start the season as they enter this week's game at ETSU with an overall record of 0-6 and an 0-3 mark in SoCon play
  • Three of Wofford's six losses have been by a combined 16 points as they lost by three to Presbyterian (23-20) and VMI (17-14) and by 10 to Chattanooga (23-13) 
  • The Terriers are coming off a 31-10 setback to Samford this past weekend in Spartanburg 
  • Wofford has lost its last 14 road games with the last win coming on Sept. 4, 2021 when they won 24-22 at Elon 
  • The Terriers, who are averaging 11.7 points per game, are posting 247.0 yards per game (123.5 passing/123.5 rushing) … Wofford has run the ball 186 times and made 142 pass attempts

  • Bridger Jones is 7-of-9 in field goals and is 4-of-4 from inside 40, while going 3-of-4 from 40-to-49 yards and 0-1 from 50 or longer … His long this season is 47 yards 
 
SERIES HISTORY 
  • Saturday is the 31st all-time meeting between ETSU and Wofford
  • The Terriers lead the all-time series 16-14 and have won nine of the last 10 
  • ETSU's lone win in the last 10 meetings came in 2021 when the Bucs won 27-21 in Greene Stadium … That win marked the first for the Blue & Gold over Wofford since Nov. 7, 1988 
  • The Terriers won last year's meeting 48-41 in Spartanburg despite ETSU racking up 562 yards of total offense, including Jacob Saylors tallying a career-high 369 all-purpose yards … Saylors finished 22 yards shy of breaking his single-game rushing record as he totaled 245 yards on the ground 
  • The Bucs are looking for back-to-back wins against Wofford in Johnson City since winning Nov. 1, 1986 (52-3) and Sept. 10, 1988 (21-7)
