Bucs sweep titles at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

ETSU, Ege cruise to wins in final tournament on home course

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Oct. 10, 2023) – The Buccaneers went out on top in the 25th and final Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.

No. 11 ETSU swept both the team and individual titles in its home tournament as final round play concluded on Tuesday afternoon at Blackthorn Club.

The Bucs, who won on their home turf for the third time in the tournament's history, saw Mats Ege become the fourth ETSU men's golfer to earn medalist honors at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.

ETSU, winners in 2018 and 2021, entered the day with a three-shot lead and ended up winning by 12 strokes with a tournament score of 27-under-par 837. The Blue & Gold shot 14-under 274 on Tuesday, marking the second straight day they posted the low round. Charlotte finished runner-up at 15-under-par 849, while Toledo and Augusta finished tied for third at 2-under-par 862.

The Bucs joined Tennessee and Virginia as the only schools to win the tournament three times. With the win, ETSU has now recorded 10 team tournament victories under head coach Jake Amos.

Ege, who captured his third collegiate win, started with his historic round on Sunday and was never caught. After firing a tournament, course and school record 10-under 62 in round one, Ege cruised to a five-shot victory at 16-under-par 200. Ege missed tying the tournament record by one shot. Ege finished the tournament with 18 birdies and 34 pars en route to joining former Buccaneer greats Archie Davies (2005 and 2006), Adrian Meronk (2015) and Jack Rhea (2019) as medalists at ETSU's home tournament.

Algot Kleen finished runner up as he posted a 54-hole score of 11-under-par 205. Kleen went low on Tuesday with a 6-under 66. After starting out with a bogey, Kleen rattled off seven birdies and 10 pars over his final 17 holes.

Overall, Ege and Kleen combined to shoot 27-under with 33 birdies for the tournament. Ege led the field in par-4 scoring (-6) and par-5 scoring (-11), while Kleen was second in par-3 scoring (-3) and par-5 scoring (-8).

For the three days, ETSU totaled a tournament-best 66 birdies, while leading the 15-team field in par-4 scoring (+2) and par-5 scoring (-26).

ETSU's other two countable scores came from redshirt freshman Jenson Forrester and graduate studentRemi Chartier. The Buccaneer duo both posted a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. For the tournament, Forrester – playing in his first Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate – finished tied for 12th at 2-under-par 214, while Chartier finished tied for 36th at 3-over-par 219.

Archie Davies, playing as an individual, finished tied for seventh at 3-under-par 213, marking his fourth top-10 finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.

The Bucs have a quick turnaround as ETSU heads to Georgia for the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, which gets underway Friday.
