Dimitri Badra captures SoCon-record ninth career honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 19, 2022) – Another week, another Southern Conference Player of the Week honor for Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela). Badra earned the men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played April 12-18, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Badra went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles as the Bucs won both contests in which he played.
In a 6-1 win at Furman on April 12 that clinched at least a share of the SoCon regular-season title, Badra topped Ivan Mitric in singles play, 6-4, 6-2, giving the Bucs the team lead for good. In doubles action, he and partner Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) dropped a 6-4 decision to James Roelofse and Emil Westling.
Badra went 2-0 on Sunday as the Bucs clinched the SoCon regular-season title outright with a 7-0 win over The Citadel. The redshirt-sophomore from Maracay, Venezuela, teamed with Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) in doubles this time, and the pair won 6-3 over Andrew Darby and Will Bush. In singles action, Badra downed Lucas Robins, 6-3, 6-1.
For the second straight year, Badra has earned the weekly honor five times in season, matching the SoCon single-season record he already shared with teammate Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) (2019). Badra’s latest award extends his league record to 10 for his career.
Top-seeded ETSU (17-6, 7-0 SoCon) faces No. 8 seed The Citadel (6-25, 0-7) for the second time in a week when the pair meet in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at 1 p.m. The tournament will be played at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
