ETSU hopes time off has prepared it for stretch run of the season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 11, 2013) – After a week off last week, the ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will get back into the swing of things as they begin the stretch run of the outdoor season this weekend at the Sea Ray Relays at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium on the University of Tennessee campus.

Following some time off the previous week to prepare for the stretch run of the season, the Buccaneers are back in action this weekend not too far from the ETSU campus. The Blue and Gold did not compete in the Sea Ray Relays the last two seasons but looks to continue some of the success it has experienced at the Relays in years past. At ETSU’s last appearance in Knoxville in 2010, now senior Jason Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a strong showing as a freshman with a mark of 13.69m and an 11th-place finish.

Competition at the Relays will get underway on Thursday with the women’s hammer throw at 4 p.m., followed by the men’s hammer throw at 6:30. The bulk of the events will begin on Friday with the men’s open discus at 12:15 p.m., followed by running and field action throughout and the men’s 10,000m run that night at 8:15 to close out the day. On Saturday, field competition will open things up at noon, followed by running showcases until roughly 2 p.m. Relay events will close things out with the men’s 4x400m scheduled as the final event set to begin at 4:40 p.m.

Joining the Buccaneers will be roughly 20 other track & field squads from throughout the country, including regional rivals such as host Tennessee, Kennesaw State, Bellarmine, Middle Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, East Carolina, Northern Kentucky, Cumberlands, Milligan, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Carson-Newman, Lee, Ashland, King and Virginia Tech, among others.

“This weekend’s meet will determine a lot about our progress and level of commitment to finish out the season on a high note,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We will have great competition and I look forward to seeing which of our kids are capable of national-level performances.”

The Buccaneers will be sending roughly 40 student-athletes to compete in various events. The man who stole the headlines almost a month ago with his record-breaking performance in the 100m dash at the Charlotte 49er Classic, Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname), will return and compete in the 100 as well as in the 200 this weekend. In the 4x800m relay, the quartet of Ryan Jones (Apopka, Fla.), Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic), Angus Baldwin (Tumbi Umbi, Australia) and Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.) will look to build off of their 7:34.55 mark and fifth-place finish at the Raleigh Relays two weeks prior.

On the women’s side, sophomore Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) will aim to continue her fantastic spring season after notching a school record time in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.64 at the Raleigh Relays. The women will also hope to prolong the momentum established in the 4x100m relay at the Raleigh Relays where the foursome of Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.), Karissa Bertling (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) turned in a 45.78 time and third-place finish.
