A-Sun Indoor Championships up next in two weeks
CLEMSON, S.C. (Feb. 9, 2013) – On the final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational, it was the ETSU track & field women who took a pair of top finishes with junior Chelsea Clark (Fairmont, W. Va.) setting a personal best and winning the mile run, while sophomore Karissa Bertling (New Port Richey, Fla.) took gold in the 200m dash.
Saturday at Clemson’s Indoor Track & Field Complex saw Clark outhustle Charlotte’s Maraya Slatter and Central Florida’s Anne-Marie Blaney down the home stretch, crossing the line in 5:00.32. Slatter was on Clark’s heels at 5:00.58 and Blaney finished at 5:00.93. The time moves Clark into a No. 4 ranking in the A-Sun. Bertling didn’t turn in her best 200m time, but it was good enough to take first. The sophomore also ran in the 400m, taking bronze.
“I felt this was the perfect tune-up for the conference championships,” Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “We had a bunch of personal bests and season bests, with some nice wins and a lot of consistency throughout the team.
“All of the event groups showed a lot of progress. I was especially pleased with the sprinters, jumpers and women’s distance and mid-distance runners and I couldn’t feel happier about where we are leading up to our conference championships.”
On the men’s side, newcomer Rashad Campbell (Henderson, N.C.) followed up his impressive Friday with a silver-medal finish in the 60m dash. Campbell tied for the No. 1 qualifying spot at 6.90, but was edged in the finals by Charlotte’s Khyran Shank who won gold at 6.77. Campbell crossed in 6.86. Also running in the event was freshman Anthony Goins (Dandridge, Tenn.), who took fourth with a time of 6.92 after qualifying in a tie for eighth.
Senior Jason Johnson (Philadelphia) equaled Campbell’s top finish for the men, earning silver in the triple jump with a season-best distance of 14.90m. The women’s half of the event saw another ETSU senior in Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh) earn a top 10, leaping 11.88m to take sixth.
The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will now look ahead to the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, which they will host Friday, Feb. 22, through Saturday, Feb. 23, at the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center.Notables MenRashad Campbell – 60m dash – 6.90 Prelims – Qualify T-1st; Finals – 6.86 – 2nd PlaceJason Johnson – Triple Jump – 14.90m – 2nd PlaceAnthony Goins – 60m dash – 6.97 Prelims – Qualify T-8th; Finals – 6.92 – 4th PlaceTim O’Dell – 400m dash – 49.62 – 8th placeAnders Ludvigsen – 3000m – 8:42.52 – 8th PlaceGraham Boone – Triple Jump – 14.47m (PR) – 8th PlaceDesmond Pierce – 800m run – 1:58.65 – 10th PlaceTrey Johnson – 60m Hurdle – 8.67 Prelims (PR) WomenChelsea Clark – Mile Run – 5:00.32 (PR) – 1st PlaceKarissa Bertling – 200m dash – 25.01 – 1st Place; 400m dash – 57.96 – 3rd PlaceKeturah Williams – 60m dash – 7.66 Prelims – Qualify 3rd; Finals – 7.66 – 5th Place- 200m dash – 25.47 – 6th PlaceKelly Monteleone – Triple Jump – 11.88m – 6th PlaceKatie Hirko – Mile Run – 5:07.35 (PR) – 9th Place
