Buccaneer freshmen highlight final day at Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Feb. 23, 2008) - A pair of Buccaneer freshmen athletes posted stellar performances in their respective events Saturday from the Virginia Tech Challenge inside Rector Field House.

 

With less than week until the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, freshmen Terra Haggard (Morristown, Tenn.) and Kendra Sigler (Tennessee) highlighted the day for ETSU.

 

Silger, who was competing in her first collegiate meet on Saturday, held her ground in the triple jump. The Tennessee native finished second in her flight and 20th overall with a mark of 36-02.25 (11.03m). The Bucs found their secret weapon in this event as it is the fifth best leap in the conference this season.

 

"I was very pleased witih Kendra's effort, especially being her first collegiate meet," mentioned associate head coach Michelle Byrne. "She performed well in such a high caliber meet."

 

On the track, (Terra) Haggard set a personal best in the mile, finishing the run with a time of 5:44.71. Haggard's previous best was set at last weekend's Tiger Invitational when she ended in 6:04.25. 

 

The ETSU track and field team will now begin preparations for the 2008 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships. The conference meet will be held next weekend inside Memorial Center.
