JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2005) - The ETSU track and field team recently added to its coaching staff with the hiring of Meg Stone and Daniel Duckworth.  Both Stone and Duckworth will be working with the men's and women's teams this season.

Stone brings a tremendous amount of coaching experience with her to ETSU.  As a former athlete herself, Stone competed in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics in the shot and discus.  She was a member of the University of Arizona track and field teams where she still holds the collegiate record for the shot and discus.  She then spent nine years as the strength coach at Arizona before heading to Texas Tech to be the head strength and conditioning coach for three years.  Stone then took a position at Appalachian State University as the head track and field coach for three years before heading overseas to Scotland to be the head strength coach for their national team.  Her most recent stop came at the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado before deciding to join the staff at ETSU.  Her husband, Mike, is the director of the lab in the physiology department at ETSU.

"We are thrilled that Meg has joined our staff at ETSU and comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge," said assistant head track and field coach Michelle Byrne.  "She will be involved in every facet of our program and will only make us better.  With her, the future is brighter than ever for track and field."

Duckworth received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Appalachian State University in 2003 where he worked for a year under Stone. While at ASU, he competed as a decathlete and a thrower. He also competed for three years in Olympic-style weight lifting. Duckworth was named the 2003 Southern Conference Champion in the 35-pound weight throw.

After graduation he played one year of Arena League Football for the Carolina Sharks.  Duckworth is currently pursuing his master's degree in exercise physiology at ETSU.  He currently specializes in coaching the throws and jumps.

He spent one season (2003-2004) as a volunteer coach at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.

"Daniel is young, energetic and enthusiastic to make things better," Byrne said.  "He is going to work at developing our multi-events and throws to make us a well-rounded team."
