Howard and Yewer Named ETSU Athletes of the Year

(July 18, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's Athletic Department has announced that Cheryl Howard (Sugar Run, Pa.) and Bradley Yewer (Newbury, England) have been selected as ETSU's female and male athletes for the 2002-03 year. The pair was selected in a vote by the Buccaneer head coaches. A member of the women's track and field team, Howard was a two-time Southern Conference Champion in her junior season. She was the Southern Conference Indoor Champion in the high jump with a mark of 1.66 meters. Howard also won the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship with her jump of 1.65 meters. During the season, Howard finished third at the Niswonger Invitational (1.65 m) and second at the UNC Charlotte Invitational (1.65 m) in the high jump. Additionally, Howard was named an All-Conference selection for indoor and outdoor track and field for the 2002-03 season. "I am delighted for Cheryl to be recognized by the coaching staff at ETSU. It is a tremendous honor and is indicative of her stellar year," commented assistant coach Michelle Byrne. A member of the men's cross country and track and field teams, Yewer is a four-time Southern Conference Champion in the 2002-03 season with one outdoor title and three indoor titles. In his sophomore season, he won conference championship titles in the 1500-meter outdoor (3:51.16), 3000-meter indoor (8:26.06), indoor mile (4:14.36), and 5000-meter indoor (15:04.83). During the indoor season, Yewer was named Southern Conference Athlete of the Week for his performances at the Rod McCravy Memorial track meet. He placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:08.29 and followed that performance with a seventh place finish in the 3000 meters, with a time of 8:27.49. Additionally, the Southern Conference named him the Most Outstanding Indoor Performer in the season. In the outdoor season, Yewer set a lifetime best and earned a regional qualifying mark of 3:47.36 in the 1500 meters at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee. He was also an All-Conference selection for indoor and outdoor track and field. "We are proud of Brad," stated Buccaneer head coach David Walker. "He is an outstanding athlete and deserves this honor for his hard work."
