Tennessee Standout Joins Buccaneer Squad

Johnson City, Tenn. (August 19, 2003) - David E. Walker, head coach of the East Tennessee State University cross country and track and field teams announced that middle distance runner Joshua Hicks (Riceville, Tenn.) will be joining the Buccaneer squad for the 2003-04 season. A four-year letterwinner in cross country and two-year letterwinner in track and field, Hicks attended McMinn County High School where he was coached by Tim Smith and Rex Phelps. He placed fourth in the state in cross country and fourth in the state in the 800 meters. Hicks was named all-state in 2002 and all-region in 2001 and 2002 in cross country. He also was a member of the 2002 state championship cross country team. In track, Hicks was a member of the 2003 state champion 4 x 800 meter relay team. He holds his high school's record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56. "I am pleased that an in-state athlete of Joshua's caliber has committed to ETSU," said Walker. "He is a versatile athlete, who shows maturity and discipline beyond his years that will help us in the upcoming season."
