JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 29, 2004) - In the second and final day of competition at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, ETSU provided another stellar performance placing third overall on the men's side and fifth overall on the women's. "The men's team has come a long way and has made significant steps forward with the third place finish," said assistant coach Michelle Byrne. "It was a real team effort on the men's side. Championships are made with athlete's being able to sacrifice individual accomplishments for the team and that is what happened today." In the men's track events, junior Buccaneer Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) defended his mile title from a year ago, pacing the field at 4:12.86. Yewer also had a strong showing in the 5000 meters with a mark of 14:53.80 for the second-place finish. For the weekend's accomplishments Yewer was voted Men's Indoor Track Performer of the Year along with Chattanooga's Steven Kocsis. "Brad ran a great 3000-meter race yesterday and a phenomenal mile and 5000-meter race today. He is a team player to the highest degree." In the 800 meters, ETSU notched second and third place with top finishes from senior David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) and freshman Joshua Hicks (Riceville, Tenn.), respectively. Sophomore James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) continued to see success in the sprints with his time of 6.82 in the 60 meters, which was good for third place. The time tied his personal best in the event. In the women's track events, the Buccaneers swept the podium in the 800 meters. Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way with her first place time of 2:14.55. "I'm really proud of Kim she has traveled a long road to get to where she is. She really has applied herself and committed to the sport and her accolades are well deserved." Simmons was followed by teammates Jennifer Habbestad (Tampa, Fla.) and Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.), who finished second and third with times of 2:18.23 and 2:20.01 respectively. Commented Byrne, "It is a great feeling to have our program come in and dominate in an event." In the 400 meters, junior Buccaneer Nichola Cornish (Spartanburg, S.C.) placed second with a time of 55.7. Junior Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) demonstrated her consistency with a first place finish and repeat of her record setting time of 7.54 from yesterday. On the meet in general Byrne stated, "As a coach you want to see your athlete's run their best at conference and ETSU's athletes were able to do just that." Men's Final Rankings 1.
