RALEIGH, N.C. (March 29, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's men's and women's track teams finished the final day of the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State, with three lifetime bests from juniors Emily Chaney (Maryville, Tenn.), David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Brad Yewer (Newbury, England). The Raleigh Relays showcase some of the nation's best talent including schools from the nation's top conferences in the Southeastern, Big Ten, and Atlantic Coast Conferences. In day two of the Raleigh Relays, the Buccaneers had only two athletes competing. Chaney finished second in her heat and sixth overall in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, setting a lifetime best with a time of 11:14.71. Haefner also had a lifetime best performance in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing fourth with a time of 9:14.92. Haefner's mark was two seconds shy of the regional qualifying mark. "Emily and David's performances today should give them a lot of confidence," Buccaneer assistant Michelle Byrne said. "They both ran real competitive, gutsy races." Friday, in the women's 100-meters, Buccaneer sophomore Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) placed 29th finishing the race with a time of 12.29. In the 400-meters ETSU had two athletes competing, juniors Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.) finished their race with times of 56.59 and 59.06, respectively. In the men's 100-meters, Marcus Barnes (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with a time of 10.93, while in the 5000-meters Yewer and James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) finished the race with times of 14:35.51 and 15:05.72, with Yewer placing 17th and running a lifetime best. "This weekend we gave a good effort all around," added Byrne. "This meet is a great meet with top competition and that puts our athlete's performances into perspective." The Buccaneers will travel to Liberty University on April 5 for the Liberty Invitational meet. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. For complete results from the Raleigh Relays, log onto www.flashresults.com.
