Haefner, Yewer to represent Bucs in NCAA track regionals
Sunday, May 18, 2003ATLANTA, Ga. (May 18, 2003) - Patiently waiting through hours of delays due to severe weather and malfunctions in the timing system, members of the East Tennessee State University men's and women's outdoor track teams finally had their last opportunity of the spring to reach NCAA regional qualifying marks during the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend. During the two-day event the bright spot for ETSU came on Friday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as junior David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) posted a second place finish with a time of 9:08.11. That time qualifies him for the regionals later this month, where he will be joined by teammate Brad Yewer (Newbury, England), who will be competing in the 1,500-meter run. Yewer, who was slowed with an injured hamstring this weekend, did not improve on the regional-qualifying times he earned earlier this year and missed out on action Saturday. In addition, ETSU's Kim Simmons (Knoxville) and Donald Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) failed to reach their qualifying times. Simmons posted a 62.26 in the 400-meter hurdles and Cabbler finished with a 55.07 in the 400-meter hurdles. "Brad was nursing a hamstring so he didn't compete on Saturday," said ETSU assistant coach Michelle Byrne. "But David and Brad will compete in the regionals and that's great for them, plus Kim and Donald got to take a great step forward by training and competing this far into the postseason."
