Each finish 8-0 in doubles and singles, Choo/Gerbasi up to No. 63 in doubles poll

MACON, Ga. (April 17, 2013) – ETSU women’s tennis freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and men’s tennis sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) cleaned up the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors, completing their individual singles and doubles A-Sun campaigns 8-0 over the weekend at Mercer and Kennesaw State.

Choo led the Lady Buccaneers (13-5, 8-0 A-Sun) to a regular season championship and this weekend’s 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship’s – hosted Friday-Sunday at the ETSU Tennis Complex – No. 1 seed. The freshman stepped up to the No. 2 hole and took out Mercer’s Lucie Payrat and KSU’s Jana Huekcinghaus, extending her winning streak to 15 matches. The two singles victories make Choo 30-7 overall, 17-1 dual and a flawless 8-0 in A-Sun play.

In doubles, Choo and classmate Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) continued their dominance as ETSU’s top pair, taking out duos from Mercer and Kennesaw to run their record to 24-8 overall, 14-2 dual and 8-0 in the A-Sun. Choo and Gerbasi have won their last 12 doubles matches and moved up to No. 63 in Tuesday’s ITA National Doubles Rankings.

Ribeiro and the men’s team (11-6, 7-1 A-Sun) also clinched a first-round bye with the championship’s No. 2 seed, defeating the Bears and Owls on the road. Ribeiro played at his usual spot on court two, fighting his way past Arnav Mohanty in three sets before dominating Maksim Yorsh in the regular season finale. Ribeiro finishes the season 27-11 overall, 12-4 dual, with his unblemished 8-0 conference mark.

On the doubles court, Ribeiro and senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) completed their conference perfection, winning by scores of 8-3 and 8-2 for the 8-0 A-Sun mark. The sophomore/senior duo is 12-10 overall and 9-6 this spring.

The women’s honor is the second of the season for Choo. Ribeiro’s men’s award is the second of his career and first of the season.

The Bucs and Lady Bucs begin play in the Atlantic Sun semifinals on Saturday.
