Lady Bucs shutout No. 74 UNF, 4-0

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 22, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team took on the reigning Atlantic Sun Tournament champion No. 74 North Florida Ospreys and served up a shutout, 4-0, Friday from the Bristol Racquet Club.

ETSU (7-4, 2-0 A-Sun) was dominant in nearly every aspect of the game and outplayed North Florida (9-4, 2-1 A-Sun) the entire match. Freshmen Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) pulled out a big win, 9-8 (7-4), to clinch doubles and the Lady Bucs rolled through singles to remain undefeated in conference play.

“This was a great day for the Lady Bucs,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “Winning in doubles set the tone and these girls gave the performance we asked of them before the match. To win in the fashion they did against a quality, nationally ranked program like UNF show our hard work is paying off.”

Choo, Gerbasi and senior newcomer Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) took the three singles points. Kolovou downed UNF’s top singles player, Lorena Aviles, 6-3, 6-4, contesting the closest of the three matches. Gerbasi eased past Melanie Aguirre, 6-2, 6-2, and Choo extended her winning streak to eight, 6-1, 6-0, past Taylor Hollander.

Three singles matches were left unfinished, with ETSU ahead in two. Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) was a game from defeat against Simona Weymar, 6-3, 5-2, and Sofia Espana (Mexico City) had just taken a set against Marina Cunningham, 6-1. Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) was just underway and ahead, 2-0, against Mariella Calderon.

Kolovou and Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) were the other ETSU duo to take a doubles set, 8-6, by Weymar and Calderon.

The Lady Bucs are back in action next Thursday, battling Stetson in DeLand, Fla. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
