This Week in ETSU Athletics: Sept. 24-30

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2012) – Below are a list of all the ETSU Athletic events taking place for the week of Sept. 24-30.
Men’s Cross Country
This week: The ETSU men’s cross country team returns to action this weekend when the Bucs head to the Bluegrass State to race in the 11th annual Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 29. The men’s course will be an 8K run, located at the E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park. Three sections of the men’s race will be held, beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by two other races at 10:45 and noon. Women’s Cross Country
This week: Like the men, the women’s cross country team will also head to Kentucky for the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday. The Bucs will run a 5K at the same location, with races being split into three different times – 10:15 a.m., 11:30, and 12:30 p.m. Results and a full recap will be available by visiting ETSUBucs.com following the event.

Last week: Freshmen Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) led the Bucs at the Mason Rudolph Championship over the weekend at Vanderbilt Legends Club. Hickman recorded his lowest round in his young Buccaneer career by carding a 2-under-par 69 in Sunday’s final round, while Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) moved up 14 spots after shooting an even-par 71. Overall, Kristjansson finished in a tie for 28th after registering a 6-over 219 (80-68-71), while Hickman (74-79-69) and fellow freshman teammate Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) tied for 40th with a three-round score of 9-over 222. As a team, ETSU totaled its lowest round of the tournament Sunday as the Blue and Gold shot a 3-over 287; however, the Bucs finished 11th overall with a score of 883 (296-300-287).
This week: The Buccaneers will play in the Golfweek Conference Challenge, which begins Monday and ends Wednesday at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. This year's 18-team field for the Golfweek Conference Challenge includes teams from 18 conferences including the Pac 12, SEC, ACC and Big 12. Teams include Denver, Oklahoma, Pepperdine, South Florida, San Jose State, Nebraska, UCLA, Missouri State, Mississippi, Tulsa, Campbell, Florida State, Texas-San Antonio, Furman, San Diego State, UC Davis and Georgia State. Last week: Senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) both finished tied for 21st on the individual leaderboard, highlighting the ETSU women’s golf team’s efforts during a seventh place finish at the season-opening Cardinal Cup, hosted by the University of Louisville at the Cardinal Club.
Men’s Soccer (4-4-0)
This week: The ETSU men’s soccer team wraps up its season-long four-game road swing Thursday night when the Bucs travel to Greenville, S.C. to face the Furman Paladins. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Stone Soccer Stadium. Live video will be available on FurmanPaladins.com, while live stats can be accessed on ETSUBucs.com. Following their game at Furman, the Bucs return home to open Atlantic Sun play when ETSU hosts Mercer on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Live video will be streamed for free via A-Sun.TV, while live stats will also be available on ETSUBucs.com.
Last week: The Bucs fell at Kentucky, 3-1, on Wednesday night and at Winthrop, 3-2, in double-overtime on Saturday. Junior David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored the lone goal versus the Wildcats, while he also added his team-leading sixth score Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C.
Women’s Soccer (7-3-0, 1-1 A-Sun)
This week: After opening conference play at home last weekend, the ETSU women’s soccer team hits the road when the Blue and Gold play at Kennesaw State and Mercer. The Bucs take on the Owls Friday night at 7 p.m., while wrapping the trip up with a 1 p.m. start at Mercer. Live video will be available for both matches, while live stats will be provided by Kennesaw State and Mercer.
Last week: The Bucs split their first two A-Sun matches of the season after opening up with a 3-1 win over Stetson on Friday night, before FGCU rallied with two unanswered goals to hand ETSU its first home defeat since last Aug. 26 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) netted a pair of goals against the Hatters, while she tied the single-season ETSU record by registering her 12th goal of the year against the Eagles.
This week: The ETSU men’s tennis team travels to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the ITA All-American Championships, beginning Saturday, Sept. 29. The tournament ends on Friday, Oct. 5 and full recaps with scores will be posted on ETSUBucs.com.

This week: Coming off a strong showing at the USC Upstate Fall Classic, the Buccaneer women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend when ETSU plays in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational. The three-day tournament begins Friday, Sept. 28. Full recaps with scores will be posted on ETSUBucs.com.
Last week: ETSU dominated the USC Upstate Fall Classic, taking home both the singles and doubles title. The duo of Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) ran through the doubles bracket, defeating top-seeded Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia of Wofford 9-7 in Sunday's final. ETSU earned three of the four semifinal spots with Espana, Choo and Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) advancing to Sunday's play. Espana beat Brumit in one semi 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, and Choo took down USC Upstate's Constanze Kuerten 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 in the other. The all-ETSU final will be contested in Johnson City later this week.
Volleyball (10-6, 1-1 A-Sun)
This week: ETSU heads to the Sunshine State for a pair of conference matches this weekend. The Bucs take on Florida Gulf Coast Friday night at 6 p.m., while squaring off with Stetson Saturday at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches by visiting FGCUAthletics.com and GoHatters.com.
Last week: The Bucs split a pair of A-Sun matches last week by suffering a 3-0 setback (23-25, 16-25, 17-25) Tuesday night at Mercer, but ETSU responded with a sweep over USC Upstate (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) on Friday night. Sophomore Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) compiled a double-double in the win over the Spartans as she finished with a season-high 16 kills and 12 digs, while junior Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) posted her ninth double-double of the year as well. Devine added 15 kills and tied a career best with 19 digs.
