Stupak headlines ITA regional rankings for ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 8, 2009) - After a strong fall campaign ETSU women's tennis senior Yevgenyia Stuapk (Kyiv, Ukraine), will start the 2010 season ranked 10th in the Ohio Valley Region the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), announced Friday.

 

The senior captain posted a 13-4 record over five fall tournaments, picking up wins over players from six nationally ranked teams. Overall, Stupak has been one of the most consistent players in the Lady Bucs lineup winning the individual title at the Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, while placing no worse than the Round of 16 in three national tournaments.

 

In addition to her singles ranking, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year was also tabbed in the doubles rankings with junior teammate Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa). The ETSU pair will begin the year ranked ninth in the region after an 8-5 record this fall. In the process the Lady Buc duo earned wins over teams from No. 40 Wake Forest, No. 50 Yale and No. 66 Harvard, while taking the doubles title at the Cissie Leary Invitational.

 

"I'm proud that the ITA recognized Yevgenyia and Kelly with these preseason rankings," said head coach Steve Brooks. "We have a tough region with teams like Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Purdue, Indiana and Kentucky in it. However, the thing that I'm most excited about when I look at these rankings is that our No. 2 doubles team has also played well against a number of highly ranked teams on our regional list."

 

With the ITA rankings now out Brooks and the team continues to work hard in practice as the Lady Bucs prepare for their season opener January 23 at Eastern Kentucky.
