ETSU remains perfect in A-Sun competition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 26, 2010) - Coming off an emotional victory over Kentucky Wednesday night, the ETSU women's tennis team carried the momentum with them to Nashville, as the Lady Bucs remained perfect in Atlantic Sun competition by defeating Lipscomb 7-0 on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, the Lady Bucs improved to 12-3, but more importantly ETSU moved to 7-0 in conference action. Meanwhile, Lipscomb has lost its last 11 matches and the Lady Bisons saw their record dip to 4-14, 0-7.

"Overall I am very pleased with our solid performance today," said head ETSU women's tennis coach Steve Brooks, whose Lady Bucs improved to 7-0 all-time against Lipscomb since moving to the A-Sun. "We did a good job of maintaining our balance today after defeating Kentucky during the week. Now we need to come back tomorrow and finish the weekend strong."

ETSU set the tone early as the Lady Bucs took the doubles point thanks to the strong play of Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania). The dominate duo blanked Danielle Hansen and Kara Jackson, 8-0. Meanwhile, doubles partners Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) each handled their competition as well. Stupak and Holtzhausen won their set, 8-4, while Navrostska and Sheets cruised to an 8-1 victory.

In singles action, the Lady Bucs didn't back down from Lipscomb, as ETSU won each match in straight sets.

Stupak, the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year, made easy work of Mackenzie Bishop in No. 1 singles play by defeating the freshman, 6-1, 6-0. Holtzhausen, who was facing Elizabeth Keevil in No. 2 singles action, took both sets, 6-1, 6-1. Then, in number three singles, Jaime also won 6-1, 6-1, against the sophomore Hansen.

ETSU continued to ease its way past Lipscomb in No. 4 singles play, as Navrostska defeated Jackson, 6-2, 6-2. In the fifth slot, Sheets - the Gate City grappler - blanked McMeen's 6-0 in the first set; however, the Lipscomb freshman provided a gritty effort in the second. Sheets, who has been sidelined by injury during singles play most of the spring, overcame some obstacles and the 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament Team selection stepped up to take the second set, 7-5.

"I thought Lipscomb's freshman Julianne McMeen played really well in the second set against Tara (Sheets)," added Brooks. "McMeen is a tough freshman and she competed really hard against us today."

Rounding out play for ETSU was Andra Voinea. The Romanian Raptor held Carlina Jow scoreless - taking both sets 6-love.

The Lady Bucs look to cap off the Nashville sweep when ETSU takes on Belmont Saturday at 11 a.m. (Eastern).
