JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 21, 2007) - The second-seeded ETSU women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun tournament after defeating Stetson, 4-2 on Saturday. The Lady Bucs improve to 17-9 on the season, while the Hatters fall to 13-11.

The Lady Bucs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they captured the doubles point. In the No. 1 position, Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) rolled past Anna Leonenko and Catherine Nowicki, 8-3, while Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) cruised past Valentina Galbarini and Samantha Lange, 8-2 in the second slot. Competing in No. 3 doubles Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) fell to Breanna Atkinson and Katherine St. Clair, 8-1.

In singles action, Elena Volobueva was the first off the courts as she dropped Catherine Canady, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 position to give the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead.  ETSU also picked up wins as Olya Batsula and Tara Byrne won in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots respectively. Batsula defeated Anna Leonenko, 7-5, 7-5, while Byrne defeated Katherine Nowicki, 7-6(10-8), 6-3.

Competing in the No. 2 position Masha Ilina fell to Breanna Atkinson, 7-6(7-5), 6-0, while Vita Moskaliova fell to Samantha Lange, 6-4, 6-4 in the sixth position. In the No. 1 slot, Yevgeniya Stupak was leading Valentina Galbarini when the match was called.

"I expected a tough match from Stetson, they are a really good team and they are coached very well," said head coach Steve Brooks. "They've got four freshmen on their team and they all competed very well and I knew that they were going to give us a battle."

"I think the key to winning is coming out in doubles and getting the doubles point and playing smoothly early on in the singles and do the things we know we can do. I think if we do that then I don't think we have to worry about winning or losing. We just have to come out and take care of business."

The Lady Bucs will take on the top-seeded Jacksonville Dolphins tomorrow in the A-Sun Championship match at 9 a.m. Follow all ETSU women's tennis action at www.ETSUBucs.com.
