JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 26, 2005) -  The East Tennessee State women's tennis team has been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for the 2004-2005 season.  This is the first time that the women's team has taken all-academic honors.  In addition to this award, two athletes received ITA Scholar Athlete status.  Senior Sandie Knight, and sophomore Muriel Sherwood were both named ITA Scholar Athletes for the first time.

"These girls are very dedicated to school and for them their academics is the most important thing," said head women's tennis coach Steve Brooks.  "The upperclassmen take pride in their academics and I want them to pass that on to the freshman so they learn to take pride in their academics quickly as well."

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any school that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above.  All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2004 and spring 2005).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Last season the Lady Bucs were19-7 and 8-2 in the conference.  The team has steadily improved over the last few years.

"Being named ITA all-academic as a team shows that not only do we excel on the courts but in the classroom as well," Brooks said.
