Women's tennis has strong first day at ITA Southeast Regional

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 13, 2005) - The ETSU women's tennis team is at the University of North Carolina this weekend competing in the ITA Southeast Regional.  Qualifying rounds began Thursday and continues through Sunday.   

"We had a very good day with only one loss which was unfortunate," said head women's tennis coach Steve Brooks.  "I'm very happy Masha qualified for the main draw, and we're looking forward to a good day tomorrow."

In qualifying singles, Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Ali Piacente of Charlotte, 6-3, 6-0.  Ilina then defeated Patricia Coimba of Winthrop, 6-3, 6-2 to qualify for the main draw tomorrow.  Also in qualifying singles, Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) lost to Marti Morris of Furman, 6-3, 6-2. 

In the main doubles, Ilina/Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw Poland) defeated Ganzer/Vuckovic of South Carolina 8-6 to advance.  Also in main doubles, Batsula/Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) defeated Palmer/Pittman of North Carolina A&T, 8-0.
