ETSU women's tennis falls to No. 20 William & Mary, 7-0

Saturday, January 28, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 28, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team dropped their season opener, 7-0 against the No. 20 ranked team of William & Mary at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

William & Mary started the day by winning all three doubles matches. Junior Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and senior Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) fell at the No. 1 position to Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic, 8-2. The doubles point was then clinched when sophomore Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) were defeated by the No. 46 ranked doubles team of Lauren Cash and Megan Muth, 8-2. Freshman Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) and sophomore Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) were also defeated in a close match, 8-7 with a tie-breaker of 8-6.

"At No. 3 doubles we played well, we played strong, at 6-6 we had our chance, but we just didn't get it done. Almost beating a doubles team from the No. 20 team in the nation is very good. At No. 1 and No. 2 we spotted them five games, and after that, when we started playing we were only down 3-2, after being down 5-0 to start that was good for our confidence," said head coach Steve Brooks.

In singles action, William & Mary again dominated the Buccaneers, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. In No. 1 singles, Masha Ilina was defeated by the No. 11 ranked Megan Moulton-Levy, 6-0, 6-0. Megan Muth defeated Tara Byrne in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomore Elena Volobueva fell to the No. 50 ranked Katarina Zoricic, 6-3, 6-1 only giving up one service break in the first set. Sylwia Ziolkowska was defeated in No. 4 singles by Lauren Cash, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Olya Batsula was defeated after a hard fought set that was taken into three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 and was decided on a 10-8 tie-breaker. In No. 6 singles, Vita Moskaliova was defeated by Barbara Zidek, 7-6 (1), 6-1 with a tie-breaker of 7-5.

"The match time was 3 hours and 45 minutes, I'm really proud about that, anytime we play the No. 20 team in the county and the match time is 3 hours and 45 minutes, that is a good sign for us," said Brooks.

The Buccaneers next match is scheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 29 against West Virginia University in Richmond, Va. at 9 a.m.
