ETSU women's tennis defeats Gardner-Webb, 7-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 24, 2006) - The Lady Bucs tennis team continued their winning ways, defeating conference opponent Gardner-Webb, 7-0. The ETSU women's tennis team, who is on a 5-game winning streak, improves to 15-3 on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 2-15.

 

Today's victory marks the first time the Lady Bucs have gone undefeated in regular-conference play.

 

In doubles action, Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Krystina Sigmon and Monica Walser, 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 position Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Jenny Gomez and Carol Pancia, 8-1, while Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Amy Beavers and Tracey Tonser, 8-0 in the No. 3 slot. 

 

In singles action the Lady Bucs once again dominated as Olya Batsula defeated Jenny Gomez, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 position, while Sandie Knight defeated Amy Beavers, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 singles, Elena Volobueva defeated Monica Walser, 6-1, 6-0. Tara Byrne defeated Krystina Sigmon, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot, and in the No. 5 position, senior Sylwia Ziolkowska defeated Carol Pancia, 6-0, 6-0, while Vita Moskaliova (Minsk Belarus) defeated Tracey Tonser, 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 in the No. 6 singles position.

 

 "With this being our first year in the conference, we are really excited to be undefeated," said head coach Steve Brooks. "This is the first time in the history of our program. We are especially excited that we won all of our conference matches, 7-0. We are really playing well as a team right now and hopefully we can continue that throughout the season."

 

The ETSU women's tennis team's next match will be tomorrow, March 25, against UNC-Charlotte. The match will start at 1:00 p.m.
