ETSU women's tennis at day two of Hokie Fall Invitational

Blacksburg, Va. (Oct. 9, 2004) - Sophomore Mariia Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) advanced to the finals in her singles bracket at the Hokie Fall Invitational. The tournament runs from Oct. 8-10 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. At the tournament the East Tennessee State University women's tennis team faces players from Appalachian State, James Madison, Radford, Winthrop and Virginia Tech.
Ilina defeated Renata Caceres of Winthrop 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals in Flight B and will now face Jessica Long of VT. Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.), Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) also participated in this bracket. Aldea fell in the consolation semifinals to Victoria Moody of ASU 6-2, 6-3, while Halim battled Kate Harrington of VT but lost 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In flight A ETSU's Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) advanced to the consolation final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kristin Nordstrom of James Madison. She will face Salem Kirven of ASU in the finals. Also in the A bracket, Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) won her match against ASU's Lyndsey Free 6-3, 7-5, while Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) fell to Paula Takahashi of Winthrop 6-1, 6-0.
Muriel Sherwood (Atlanta, Ga.) completed for ETSU in Flight C of the tournament. She fell in the semifinals to Julia Facchina of VT 6-2, 6-2. However, in doubles action Sherwood advanced to the Fight B finals with her partner Moita of Winthrop by defeating Ackernbom and Calzadilla 8-2. They will now face VT's Facchina and Holmes.
In Flight A doubles, ETSU's Aldea and Halim suffered a tough 8-3 loss to Lam and Larson of VT, but went on to defeat James Madison's Napier and Nordstrom 8-4. Ilina and Ziolkowska defeated Napier and Nordstrom 8-5 to advance to the semifinals where they faced Lam and Larson, but fell by a score of 8-2. Knight and Volobueva defeated Elazari and A. James of VT 8-6 to advance to the quarterfinals, but then fell to Caceres and Takahashi of Winthrop.
ETSU wraps up Hokie Fall Tournament action tomorrow beginning with doubles finals at 9 a.m. followed by the singles finals in all events.
