ETSU Women's Tennis Improves Day Two of the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Tournament

COLUMBIA, S.C. (November 1, 2003) - Action continued at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Tournament as the East Tennessee State women's tennis team entered the second day of competition winning six of their singles matches and one of their doubles matches. In singles competition, Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) won her match against Appalachian State's Netzler 6-1, 6-3 in the A2 bracket. Freshman Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) won her two backdraw matches in the tournament. She first defeated Ingle 6-0, 6-1 before facing Wofford's Hartness 6-0, 7-6 (1). Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) also won her two backdraw matches on Saturday. Halim won the first match 6-7 (5), 6-0, 1-0 (5) against Lauren Filliettaz of UNC-Wilmington. Also earning a win in singles competition for the Bucs was Aimee Villavicincia (Lexington, Ky.) who defeated College of Charleston's Jennifer Hancock. Buccaneer doubles team of Ilyina and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) continued in regular competition with their defeat of UNC-Charlotte's Laura Swain and Ashleigh Murray, 9-7 to advance. The pair of Aldea and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) who had advanced to the second round, fell to the consolation rounds with their loss to Charlotte Wilson and Andreea Niculescu from the College of Charleston 9-7. Tournament action concludes Sunday with Doubles beginning at 8am tomorrow, singles in the backdraw will follow at 9:30, and main draw singles will start at approximately 11am.
