Women's Tennis Claims Victory Over University of Memphis, 5-2

Saturday, February 28, 2004

TROY, Ala. (Feb. 28, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory on the road against the University of Memphis in Troy, Ala. The Bucs improve to a 7-4 record for the spring season. "It was a good day to be outside and we had very good weather," commented head coach Steve Brooks. "We played competitively and I'm very happy with the match today." ETSU took the early lead by winning the doubles point with wins from pairs Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) in the No. 2 slot and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) in the No. 3 slot. In singles action ETSU continued the momentum by winning four of the six matches. Ziolkowska, Halim, Irey, and Ilyina brought in wins for the Bucs. Senior Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) battled hard, but lost her match to University of Memphis' Marlene Dirstorfer in the No. 1 slot 6-3, 6-0. Brooks stated, "In the matches we won, we played our game and stayed on top. Sometimes we eased off but were able to come back and find our groove to finish off the match. In the matches that we lost, we were much more competitive than some of the scores show. We need to clean up a couple of points for tomorrow's match and the rest of the season." "Overall, it is a good win for us. We played solid, but still have some areas and situations that we need to improve and work on to have a good show in the conference." The Bucs continue play tomorrow with a match against host Troy State University at 1:00 p.m. ETSU 5, University of Memphis 2 Doubles: 1. Viktoria Gruber/Marlene Dirnstorfer (UM) def.
