SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Mar. 23, 2004) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team was dealt a 5-2 road loss when it battled Wofford Tuesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Lady Terriers started the match off strong by picking up the doubles point. The Bucs won the first of the doubles matches with the pair of Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) defeating Wofford's Kristen Bowman and Lauren Marie Whisenhunt in the No. 3 position. At the No. 1 slot, Wendy Rohr and Ellen Rogers earned an 8-3 win over Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine). Wofford also won the No. 2 seeded match when Tara Hartness and Delaine Hare posted an 8-3 decision against Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.). In singles play, Rohr continued her dominant season by winning 6-1, 6-1 over McInnis at the No. 1 position. Rohr now holds a 9-1 singles record while nearly matching it with an 8-2 doubles mark with Rogers. Rogers used three sets to defeat Halim, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 at the No. 2 slot. Hare picked up the deciding point for the Lady Terriers during the No. 5 singles match. She also went three sets and came out victorious over Ilyina, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. Kristen Bowman sealed the triumph with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Aldea. "Our team wasn't prepared, and we made too many unforced errors," commented head coach Steve Brooks. "We didn't come out strong. We had our shots but in the end we were not able to execute." ETSU picked up its two wins from Ziolkowska in the No. 3 slot (6-3, 6-4) and Irey at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2). With the victory, Wofford improves to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Bucs drop to 11-7, 2-1 in the league.
