JOHNSON, Tenn. (April 16, 2004) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team sent its seniors out with a 5-2 win over Southern Conference opponent UNC Greensboro on Friday afternoon. ETSU's four seniors Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia), Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.), Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine), and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) were recognized at the match. The Bucs finish up the regular season with a 15-11 overall record and tied for fourth place in the Southern Conference with a 6-4 record, while the Spartans record stands at 4-13, 3-6. "It was a good win, and it's good to finish tied for fourth in the conference," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I'm proud of the seniors each of them earned a win on the courts today." ETSU secured the critical doubles point with wins from Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Irey in a 8-4 decision at No. 2 and McInnis and Villavicencio in a 8-6 final score at No. 3. Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) battled at the No. 1 slot against UNCG's Lindsey Peel and Carlin Kannan but fell 9-7. In singles action ETSU kept the momentum going with wins from Halim at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3), Irey at No. 4 (7-6 [7-4], 6-3), Ilyina at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2), and Arriaran at No. 6 (3-6, 6-1, 6-4). Irey recorded the clinching point for the Buccaneer victory. The Bucs will travel tomorrow for their last two matches of the regular season against non-conference opponents the College of William & Mary at 3:00 p.m. and Virginia Tech at 6:00 p.m. ETSU 5, UNC Greensboro 2 Doubles 1.
