Thursday, June 03, 2004

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 3, 2004) - East Tennessee State University's women's tennis head coach Steve Brooks announced today the addition of Margie Brown Katras as Assistant Coach for the 2004-05 season. "I am extremely happy to have Margie join us as Assistant Coach," said Brooks. "Margie brings a lot of experience both as a player and coach. Her knowledge of the game will help in recruiting, day to day practice, and will help us be more mentally tough on match days." A native of Kingsport, Tenn., Brown Katras joins the ETSU women's tennis team for her first year as an assistant coach at the collegiate level. She comes to ETSU from the Ridgefields Country Club in Kingsport where she held the position of Head Pro. At Ridgefields Brown Katras coached several state and sectionally ranked juniors. In 2002 Margie was named Tennessee Tennis Pro of the Year. Brown Katras played collegiately at the University of North Carolina. While there, she won several ACC titles in singles and doubles and was named an All-American. Additionally, she was recently recognized as one of the ACC's top 50 female tennis players for the last 50 years. Brown Katras also had an extensive junior career that included being ranked No. 1 in Tennessee for five years as well as a No. 1 Southern and No. 18 USTA National ranking in the 18 & under division. A graduate of Dobyns Bennett in Kingsport she led her team to two state team titles and three individual doubles and singles state titles. Brown Katras is married to long time ETSU tennis supporter Dr. Tony Katras. She has two sons, Luke and Matt, who helped Dobyns Bennett win back-to-back state tennis titles in 2003-2004. Matt also won the state doubles title this year. "With Margie joining us, I can now spend more needed quality one on one time developing each player," stated Brooks. "ETSU Women's Tennis has made great improvements over the past 3 years. We have gone from 1-21 in my first year to last year we beat some nationally ranked teams and defeated last year's returning SoCon tournament champion." Brooks added, "The addition of Margie Brown Katras as a coach is another building block toward the goal of making this team national ranked and a favorite to win yearly conference championships."
