JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2003) - East Tennessee State University women's tennis team defeated Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, and Dayton, to go undefeated over the weekend. The Buccaneers defeated Morehead State 4-3 Friday night after defeating host Eastern Kentucky, 7-0, earlier in the day. ETSU returned to defeat Dayton Saturday morning, dropping the Flyers, 7-0. "I am very happy with our progress," head coach Steve Brooks said. "We are starting to come together as a team." In last night's match versus Morehead State, the Buccaneers swept all three doubles matches and posted three singles victories from sophomore Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia), Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cocabamaba, Bolivia). "This was a good win for us," said Brooks. "It is always difficult to play two good teams back to back." Against Dayton, the Buccaneers swept the Flyers, who were ranked, 66th in the country last season. Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) defeated Rebecca Stanchin 6-4, 6-2 at number one singles. Halim defeated Chrissy Whalen, 6-3, 6-0, at number two singles, while Irey dropped Angie Del Rosso, 6-1, 6-1 at the number three position. Buccaneer junior Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) defeated Katie Landrigen, 6-2, 6-1, and Arriaran defeated Dayton's Julie Green 6-0, 6-2 at the number five spot. Buccaneer sophomore Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, KY) defeated Megan Flynn, 6-2, 6-0, at number six singles. In doubles play the tandem of Ziolkowska and Villavicencio defeated Stanchin and McDowell, 8-6, while Halim and Irey defeated Whalen and Del Rosso, 8-2. In the final doubles match of the day McInnis and freshman Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) defeated Dayton's Green and Landrigen, 8-4. "We played solid today despite playing for 8 1/2 hours yesterday," said Brooks. "I'm very happy that we were able to beat two teams that beat us last season." The Buccaneers move to 8-4 on the season and return to action March 8 as they host Winthrop at 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Center. ETSU will begin Southern Conference play on March 12 as the Furman Paladins visit Johnson City at 2 p.m. ETSU def. Morehead State, 4-3 Singles Schwarz def. Ziolkowska, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 Halim def.
