Women's Tennis cruises past Appalachian State, 5-2

(April 12, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's women's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State, Saturday afternoon, at the ETSU Tennis Complex. Appalchian State took the early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the number one and number three positions. ETSU's Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla) defeated Salem Kirven and Tammy Beaulieu, 8-3, at the number two doubles spot. In singles action, the Buccaneers cruised, with their lone loss coming in a three set match at the number five position. Buccaneer freshman Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) defeated Beaulieu, in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, at number one singles. Halim dropped Appalachian State's Kasia Finkowska, 6-2, 6-0, at the number two spot, while Irey defeated Victoria Moody, 6-4, 6-4, at number three singles. ETSU freshman Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) cruised to victory at number four singles, defeating Elena Berger, 6-2, 6-3. Kirven defated ETSU's Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) at number five singles, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. At number six singles, Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) dropped Donna Altanburger in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. "It's always hard at the end of the year, especially when you have had several heart breaking matches, to stay focused." Buccaneer head coach Steve Brooks said. "I felt like we stayed focused today and really played hard. There were spots in today's line up that I wanted the girls to improve on and most showed me some good things." With the win the Buccaneers move to 11-15, 2-6 in conference play. The Buccaneers will close out the regular season tomorrow as they take on Wofford at 1 p.m. at the ETSU Tennis Complex.
