Women's Tennis Earns First Victory of Season

Johnson City, Tenn. (February 5, 2002) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team (1-1) defeated the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (0-1) Tuesday night to earn their first team victory of the season. Four Bucs also earned their first season victories. ETSU took the doubles point with two wins. Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia) won the No. 1 doubles match from UNC Asheville's Stefanie Shube and Sarah Cox in a long and tough battle 9-8. In the No. 2 doubles match, Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) took the win, 8-1, over Nancy Livesay and Ashley Jones. UNC Asheville would take the third doubles match with Emily Aker-Estes and Stacey Witkowski defeating Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N. C.). In singles competition, Halim earned her first victory as a Buc winning in two sets (6-1, 6-3) over Shuba in the No. 1 position. Irey took her No. 2 match against Cox with the scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Arriaran defeated Livesay in the No. 3 match, 6-3 and 6-1. Villavicencio defeated Jones in the No. 4 match by 6-1 and 6-0. The two Bulldog wins came in the No. 4 and 5 spots. In the No. 4 match, Aker-Estes beat Jones, 6-3 and 6-2. Witkowski took the No. 6 match from Luvis (6-3, 6-4).
