Winthrop Defeats Women's Tennis, 7-0

Johnson City, Tenn. (Apr. 11, 2002) The East Tennessee State women's tennis team fell to Winthrop, 7-0, Thursday afternoon in non-conference action from Rock Hill, S.C. The Eagles (14-4) took all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Eagles Judit Trunkos and Renata Caceres knocked off the ETSU (1-19) team of freshman Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and sophomore Jessica Irey (Belle Glade, Fla.), 8-4, at the No. 1 seed. Winthrop's Ana Simanca and Jenny Andrade earned an 8-1 victory over ETSU sophomores Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Colombia) and Aimee Villaviencio (Louisville, Ky.) in the two spot. At No. 3, the Eagles' Renata Barreto and Jacki Deason won by default over ETSU sophomore Heather Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and junior Charmaine Luvis (Gastonia, N.C.). In singles play, Winthrop's Trunkos knocked off ETSU's Halim 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Winthrop's Andrade defeated Buccaneer Irey, 6-3, 6-1 in the two slot. ETSU's Arriaran took a set from at Winthrop's Simanca at No. 3 singles, but fell in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 10-3. The Eagles' Barreto used straight sets of 6-1, 6-1 to defeat Arriaran of ETSU at No. 4. Winthrop's Caceres cruised past the Bucs' Jones 6-0, 6-1 in the five slot. Winthrop's Natasha Lucki won by default over ETSU's Luvis. The Buccaneers return to Southern Conference action on Saturday at noon as they play in-state rival Chattanooga from the ETSU Tennis Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
