Becomes the first Lady Buc in program history to be honored three times in a year
MACON, Ga. (Sept. 24, 2012) – Junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) continued to find the back of the net this past weekend, scoring three goals en route to being named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday.
With her third player of the week selection, Kerns becomes the first Lady Buccaneer in ETSU women’s soccer history to earn three weekly honors. Lisa Gallagher (1998), Erin Ashton (2005), Kelly Brinkman (2007) and Terri Miller (2010) are the only other Lady Bucs to earn multiple honors in a season.
Kerns tied ETSU history on the opening weekend of A-Sun play. The junior striker scored twice in the win over Stetson and once against Florida Gulf Coast to up her goals total this season to 12 and tie Ashton’s program mark, set in 2002, for most goals in a single season. Having tallied three assists as well, Kerns sits just three points shy of Ashton’s record (30) for points in a season.
In ETSU’s conference opener on Friday, Kerns put the Lady Bucs in front just 5:18 into the contest. Senior Morgan Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.) found the A-Sun’s leading goal scorer with a cross through the box after sophomore Emilee Engelhaupt (Charlotte, N.C.) won possession near the top of the penalty area, and Kerns one-timed the chance through. The goal was the earliest in a game for ETSU since scoring at the 2:14 mark last year in the win over Longwood. Kerns padded the lead in the 70th minute, scoring an unassisted goal which proved to be the game-winner.
On Sunday against FGCU, Kerns put ETSU in front by converting her second penalty of the year in the 64th minute. Freshman Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) earned the penalty, weaving her way around Eagle defenders before being tripped up from behind in the box. Kerns also took a game-and-season-high seven shots in the contest.
- Has been selected A-Sun Player of the Week three times this season, becoming the first Lady Buccaneer in program history to be recognized three times in a season.
- Becomes the first A-Sun student-athlete since Kennesaw State’s Caitlin Dingle in 2007 to be named player of the week three times in a year.
- Tied the ETSU record for goals in a season (12) set by Erin Ashton in 2002. Sits three points shy of Ashton’s points record (30) set in 2005.
- Scored three goals in two games, including her third multi-goal game of the year in the win over Stetson.
