ETSU posts 3.28 GPA, earning fourth team award in last five years

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Dec. 9, 2011) – For the fourth time in the last five years, the ETSU women’s soccer team was rewarded for their work in the classroom by earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 academic year.

The Lady Bucs joined every Atlantic Sun affiliated women’s soccer program on the 2011 team award list, which includes Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida, USC Upstate and Stetson.

“I’m very proud of how the team has applied itself both on and off the pitch,” said ETSU head coach Adam Sayers. “The overall team GPA reflects how hard they’ve worked both in the classroom and on the field. This program has multiple goals, which includes performing well academically, and we certainly achieved that this year.”

A total of 571 NCAA women’s soccer programs earned the team award. To earn the NSCAA Team Academic Award, a program’s student-athletes must attain an average GPA of 3.0 or higher. Sayers’ squad did so, posting a 3.28 mark.

This all comes as part of the most successful season in the history of women’s soccer at ETSU. In his first year as head of the program, Sayers led the Lady Bucs to a 12-5-1 overall, 7-1-1 A-Sun, mark, earned a share of ETSU’s first Atlantic Sun regular season championship, a No. 2-seed in the A-Sun Tournament Championship, and was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year – the program’s first such honor. ETSU’s 12 wins and seven conference victories tied for the most in program history, and its No. 2-seed was its highest ever in a conference tournament. Senior Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) and freshman Jenna Caudle (Middletown, Md.) also earned yearly accolades, as Petersen earned the program’s first A-Sun Player of the Year and Caudle was named Freshman of the Year.
