ETSU looks to extend three-game winning streak in Oxford

OXFORD, Ohio (September 8, 2011) – After dropping two close contests to start the year, the ETSU women’s soccer team has come roaring back, scoring 13 goals in its last three games, to roll off three-consecutive wins, and will now travel to Oxford, Ohio for a weekend series against Wright State and Miami University in the RedHawk Shootout Tournament inside the Miami Soccer Field. The Lady Bucs take on Wright State on Friday, September 9, at 1:30 p.m. before taking on host Miami on Sunday, September 11, at 3 p.m.

ETSU (3-2-0) comes off a weekend sweep of Alabama A&M and Longwood, outscoring the two squads by a combined 12-1, and looks to build from that momentum heading into this weekend.

Last Friday, against Longwood, the Lady Bucs and Lancers were dead even, 1-1, after 90 minutes and played into the second overtime period. With 1:20 to go, senior Jessica Hiltenbrand (Bartlett, Tenn.) lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out and buried the attempt to score her first goal of the season and lift ETSU to its second win in as many games. The following Sunday, the Lady Bucs set the program record for goals in a game, scoring 10 against Alabama A&M en route to a 10-0 victory and senior Caitlin Gaughan’s (Indianapolis, Ind.) second shutout in three games. Sophomore Molly Vaughn (Nashville, Tenn.) recorded her first collegiate hat-trick, scoring three goals over just a 34 minute span.

Going into the RedHawk Shootout, ETSU’s offense will be led by freshman standout Jenna Caudle (Middletown, Md.), who leads the team with three goals including one game-winner. Caudle has been a big part to ETSU’s success, scoring the equalizer against Tennessee Tech, the game-winning goal with 10 minutes left in a, 1-0, victory over reigning Big South regular season champion Radford and the go-ahead goal just 2:14 into the eventual win over Longwood. The Lady Bucs lead the A-Sun in goals, outscoring their opponents by a combined 15-5.

Wright State (3-2-1) started out the year with three wins but has struggled lately against some tough competition. The Raiders are 0-2-1 in their last three games, losing, 2-1, to then-No. 7 Ohio State, playing to a scoreless draw against Ole Miss and most recently dropping a, 1-0, contest to Auburn. The Raiders spread out their goal scoring, with Jen Agueci, Liz Soto and Sarah Gross all netting two goals apiece to lead the team.

Miami (2-2-0) comes into its tournament with a very similar storyline to Wright State. The Red Hawks won their first two contests, shutting out IUPUI and Morehead State by the same score, 4-0, but have dropped the two since. Against Xavier, Miami went down, 2-0, in the first half before converting on a penalty kick to close the game to one goal heading into the half, but could not notch another score. Most recently, against Eastern Kentucky, the Red Hawks took a, 1-1, game into overtime but gave up the game-winner four minutes into the extra session to lose, 2-1. Jess Kodiak and Katy Dolesh lead the team with three goals each while goalkeeper Allison Norenberg has given up four goals, making eight saves, in 363:36 of play for a goals against average of 0.99.
