Bucs host Tennessee Tech to begin the home season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 25, 2011) – On Friday, Summers-Taylor Stadium will play host to ETSU’s first home match of the fall 2011 regular season, as the women’s soccer team welcomes Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m.

The Bucs enter Friday looking to improve upon the positives from last Friday’s, 2-1, defeat by Wofford, and secure a victory against the in-state Golden Eagles.

“Obviously we’re really looking forward to the game because it is our home opener,” said head coach Adam Sayers. “We expect [Tennessee Tech] to be a tough opponent. With it still being this early in the season, we’ll still focus mostly on ourselves with the strategies and tactics we’ve been working on for the past few weeks.”

Nine freshmen for ETSU (0-1-0) will make their home debut on Friday, as well as two members of the coaching staff in Sayers and assistant coach Debs Brereton. A week ago, the Bucs traveled to Spartanburg for their first match of the 2011 season but could not come away with the result they intended in a hard-fought contest against Wofford. The Terriers got on top early and although Morgan Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.) scored for ETSU midway through the second half, the two-goal deficit was a little too much for the Buccaneers to overcome.

“From a psychological standpoint we want to make sure that we’re focused and fully prepared from the very first whistle, said Sayers. “We conceded a goal with less than two minutes on the clock last week so we want to make sure we’re completely focused so it doesn’t happen again.”

Tennessee Tech (0-2-0) will enter Summers-Taylor Stadium on Friday still looking for its first win on the young season. Last weekend, the Golden Eagles hosted both Chattanooga and Belmont but could not come away victorious, getting outscored by a combined 5-2 in the two contests. Like ETSU, Tennessee Tech carries a fairly young roster with 11 freshmen, six sophomores, five juniors and a lone senior.

In their nine matches all-time, ETSU and Tennessee Tech have posted a dead even 3-3-3 record. The last meeting between the two teams came September 14, 2007 and resulted in a, 2-2, draw. The Bucs will look to take the series lead on Friday, and stamp their first win of 2011.

“We attempted to prepare for the game by training in the stadium under the lights to familiarize ourselves with the environmental conditions as much as possible,” said Sayers. “It’ll be a first and enjoyable experience for a lot of the players and for us as a staff.”
