Freshmen Lead Bucs to Shutout of Presbyterian
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
Newcomers Caudle and Maxson each score in exhibition
CLINTON, S.C. (August 16, 2011) – The ETSU women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the 2011 preseason on Tuesday night, blanking Presbyterian, 2-0. Freshmen Jenna Caudle (Middletown, Md.) and Taylor Maxson (Lewisville, Texas) scored within two minutes of each other midway through the second period, in an exhibition that was played through three 30 minute sessions.
“We got everything I intended to get out of this match,” said head coach Adam Sayers. “We experimented a bit with a bunch of players in several positions. Defensively we looked quite strong and we achieved our objective tonight.”
Coming off a, 1-1, draw at home against Campbell, Sayers was looking to see his team respond with both offense and defense against a young Presbyterian squad. ETSU did so by scoring two goals on an 18-6 shot advantage, with five different Bucs putting up multiple shots.
Senior Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) and sophomore Kayla White (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Bucs out of the gate. After an early shot by Presbyterian’s Lauren Snyder, Petersen and White combined for the game’s next five shots. Petersen had both of her attempts saved while White had one stopped by the keeper and two blocked by Presbyterian defenders.
Although the first period remained scoreless, ETSU would get on top nine minutes into the second. Working the ball close to the goal, Caudle saw her opportunity and fired a shot from 15 feet out that found the upper right corner of the net and gave the Bucs a, 1-0, advantage. The goal was Caudle’s first through the two friendlies and gave ETSU the first goal for the second time in as many contests.
Less than two minutes later the Bucs added to the lead courtesy of Maxson. Threatening to score, Maxson saw Presbyterian’s Sarah Anderson ahead and cut right causing Anderson to fall and leave an open net for ETSU’s second goal of the game. Maxson combined for five shots to lead the way for both squads.
“I think our speed in transition was very pleasing tonight,” said Sayers. “When we lost possession we quickly regained our shape and got possession back which was very encouraging.”
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.) kept a clean sheet through the three periods, making two saves on the six shots she faced.
Overall, the Bucs wrap up the preseason unbeaten, finishing 1-0-1, scoring three goals while giving up only one. Junior Morgan Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.) scored the goal against Campbell to join Caudle and Maxson as the three goal scorers of the two friendlies. Caudle also added an assist in each game to tally four points in the two contests.
The ETSU women’s soccer team will begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 19 against Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C.
