Miller lifts Bucs over Winthrop 2-1 in double overtime at the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 12, 2010) - A Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) double overtime goal lifted the ETSU women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Winthrop on Sunday at Summers-Taylor Stadium in the finale of the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel.
"This is a good win for us, and I am proud of the way the team played hard throughout the match," said head coach Heather Henson. "We had a slow start, but we found a rhythm and really started to take over the game. This win was a credit to our depth as we were able to have fresh legs on the field throughout the game. Our bench also played big coming into the game and keeping the same intensity and effort."
The Bucs (4-2-1) outshot the Eagles (0-4-1) 18-8 in the contest and had a 7-2 advantage in corners. Junior Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up her fourth win of the season making three saves on the afternoon.
Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute after a Tricia Vensel goal from 8-yards out.
After the Eagle goal, he Buccaneer offense picked up the intensity out-shooting WU 5-4 in the half, but the Bucs could not find an equalizer as the score remained 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, it did not take the Bucs long to even things as Jessica Hiltenbrand (Bartlett, Tenn.) and Courtney Deem (Evansville, Ind.) combined to find Miller wide open streaking towards the net as she played the ball on the ground past the Winthrop keeper for a breakaway goal.
The second half ended in a 1-1 as ETSU had a 7-4 shot advantage in the half.
The Bucs dominated the first overtime period taking five shots, while keeping the Eagles shotless, but the game would go into a second overtime period.
In the second overtime, Miller headed a cross from junior Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) into the back of the net in the 104th minute for the game-winner to make the final 2-1 Bucs.
Seniors Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) and Miller were named to the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel All-Tournament Team.
The women's soccer team is back in action next Saturday at 5 p.m. as the Bucs host Campbell to open Atlantic Sun conference play.
Miami University (OH) picked up a 2-1 win over Temple in the first game of the day to win the ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel.
The RedHawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute as Courtney Clarke played a ball through to Katy Dolesh who ripped a shot into the back of the net.
Tournament MVP Jess Kodiak gave Miami a 2-0 advantage in the 65th minute as she settled a ball from Rachel Byron and ripped a shot past Gillian Kacsuta from 10-yards out.
The Owls cut the lead to 2-1 in the 83rd minute on an Alllicia Yurkovic goal, but could not manage an equalizer as the final was 2-1 MU.
