Friday, August 13, 2010

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Aug. 12, 2010) - After waiting 259 days, the ETSU women's soccer team was back in action Thursday as they dropped an exhibition match to Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Field in Charleston, S.C., 2-1.

"It was good to finally get out on the field and compete against someone we have never faced before," said head coach Heather Henson, "I was very pleased with the way we performed despite the outcome. We have had a very good preseason so far, and you could see it all coming together today. We still need to work on some things, but overall it was a good day for us."

ETSU was outshot 25-14 in the contest as Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for 13 saves on the afternoon.

Charleston Southern got on the board first in the 33rd minute as Stacy Ulichnie linked up with Marky Boyce to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half, CSU added to its lead as Olivia Urig found an open Allison Lewis to put Charleston Southern up 2-0 in the match.

ETSU answered in the 64th minute as Kelly Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) played a ball through to Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) inside the 18-yard box, and Kerns slotted the ball past the keeper into the net to cut the CSU lead to 2-1.

The Bucs offered a couple chances late in the match, but could not find the back of the net as the game ended with a final of 2-1.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Sunday at 5 p.m. as the Bucs host Radford in the final exhibition game of the season. For more information on ETSU women's soccer and all other Buccaneer athletic news please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
