RADFORD, Va. (Sept. 4, 2009) - After a late game-tying goal by host Radford, the ETSU women's soccer team showed its toughness overcoming  the reigning Big South champs 2-1  Friday evening, at Cupp Stadium in Radford, Va.

"Tonight was a great victory," said head coach Heather Henson. "Radford is a tough team to beat on the road. It seems like every time we play them at their place it's a great match. Tonight both teams played a physical, tactical match throughout each period. I'm so proud of our player's effort and how they kept fighting in regulation for the win."

ETSU (1-3-0, 0-0-0 A-Sun) quickly opened the scoring as senior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas) cleaned up a Buc corner kick for the matches first goal in the 10th minute.

The Bucs held their one-goal advantage as play headed late into the second half. After an ETSU foul in the 86th minute Highlander senior midfielder Justine Dugger roped home a free kick from 35 yards out, which knotted the match at 1-1.

With the Radford (2-1-0, 0-0-0 Big South) home crowd back in the match - and less than four minutes left in regulation - ETSU dug deep and responded in sudden fashion.

After the ensuing kickoff, ETSU immediately moved down the pitch where sophomore midfielder Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio), took a long pass down the right side. The second year starter then crossed an outstanding pass over to junior forward Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.), who fired home the game-winner with two minutes to play.

"Our backs played well throughout the match," said Henson. "Their solid play gave Radford a tough time right through the end of the contest. Our line with Tori (Head) and Terri did a great job up top with a number of scoring chances. Overall, it took a lot of heart and character for our team to close out Radford with only minutes left in regulation."

All-around the Bucs got a number of great individual efforts from sophomore goalkeeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman midfielder Morgan Thomas (Maryville, Tenn.).

Masch led the ETSU defense with seven saves, while Thomas continued to improve on both sides of the ball.

"Morgan has maintained her level of play throughout our first four matches," Henson said. "Everyday she's got better and I thought tonight her effort on the attack and stopping Radford's offense showed the ability she has as a player. Even though the stat sheet might not have her with a number of shots, like a lot of girls tonight, she did the little things that allowed us to get the win."

With the victory ETSU looks to keep its winning ways as they welcome regional rival UNC-Asheville with a 2:00 p.m., contest Sunday at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

"We've been so close this season and I believe tonight was the breakthrough we needed," said Henson. "Like our match at Tennessee, we had a great fan base on the road this evening. A number of families and fans made the trip over to Radford. What a great testament to our program and system to have the support we've got on the road."

With the victory ETSU improved to 6-4-2 all-time against Radford. Individually, Miller's game-winner was the Cape Coral, Fla., native's fourth career goal against the Highlanders.
