Miller nets game winner in double overtime
Friday, September 25, 2009
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2009) - The ETSU women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a more exciting way to open its 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference season, as the Bucs defeated league rival North Florida in double overtime 1-0 Friday at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
"Every time we play Linda (UNF head coach) and North Florida it's a battle," said head coach Heather Henson. "Tonight was an old school type of match with both teams playing hard and physical to the entire end."
After both teams battled through a scoreless first 108 minutes of play ETSU's (2-7-0, 1-0 A-Sun) defense played a long pass down the right side to senior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas). The preseason all-conference player then crossed a beautiful pass to junior forward Terri Miller (Cape Coral, Fla.) right through the heart of the UNF backline.
After Miller settled the pass, the Cape Coral, Fla., native took very little time to respond, as she ripped home the game-winnner from 25 yards out, giving the Bucs their first conference win of the season.
"I'm proud of how our girls keep our composure and keep fighting to the end," said Henson. "We didn't have all the scoring opportunities that we wanted, but in the end we got a great pass from Jordan and Terri fired a great shot to give us the win."
The Lady Ospreys best scoring chances came early in the second overtime period. First UNF forward Kristin Rhodes fired a strong one-timer from just outside the box, however sophomore ETSU keeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped high tipping the ball over the crossbar. Minutes later the second-year starter made another incredible stop, making a point blank save after UNF midfielder Viandna Petrichevic ripped a shot inside the box.
"Megan made some unbelievable saves tonight," Henson said. "Throughout the entire contest she was able to keep us in the match. With that our forwards kept working to create those opportunities and you saw that with our goal in the second overtime period."
The Bucs will now take their unbeaten conference mark and return to action hosting A-Sun rival Jacksonville, Sunday.
"I'm so proud of every girl on this team," said Henson. "We would have liked to win in 90 minutes, however a win is a win. This first victory in conference is going to help our team against Jacksonville. Every time we play them it's a battle and our girls know going into Sunday's match that its going to be a tough contest throughout. That being said, hopefully our confidence and work ethic will contiune against them."
