Van Horn honored as A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. (Oct. 15, 2007) - Prior to this past weekend, ETSU freshman Rachel Van Horn made her first 10 collegiate appearances as a forward and recorded a goal and two assists. However, injuries forced Van Horn into the net for both games this over the weekend and her performance garnered the first A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week award in ETSU history.

 

Van Horn's performance which included a shutout victory over Gardner-Webb and a tie against Campbell helped the Buccaneers extend their unbeaten streak to three and move into eighth place in the conference standings.

 

On Friday, Van Horn, the Thousand Oaks, Calif. native, turned away five shots in picking up the Buccaneers' fourth shutout of the season. Two days later against Campbell, Van Horn finally allowed a goal after almost 180 minutes of scoreless net-minding. She allowed the tying goal in the 90th minute, but preserved the tie.

Sarah Keyser, GWU (So. - MF - Boonsoboro, Md. - Undeclared) -- Netted the game-winning goal against USC Upstate and dished out an assist minutes later in Gardner-Webb's 2-0 win.

 

Jordan Monty, ETSU (So. - MF - Mesquite, Texas - Undeclared) -- Scored game-winning goal against Gardner-Webb; scored goal against Campbell; leads ETSU in goals, shots and points.

 

Samantha Spradley, UPST (Jr. - GK - Fayetteville, Ga. - Art Education) -- Enjoyed best week at Upstate this past week, leading team to 1-0 win over Campbell for Upstate's first-ever A-Sun Conference win.

 

Keri Zwikker, JU (Jr. - F - Woodstock, Ontario - Exercise Science) -- Despite being the main focus of Florida Gulf Coast, Zwikker still scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 85th minute.
