East Tennessee State Soccer Ties Radford in Home Opener
Wednesday, September 05, 2001ohnson City, Tenn.-- East Tennessee State (0-2-1) soccer played a very physical double overtime game against the Radford Highlanders (0-1-1) on Wednesday night at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex, which ended in a 0-0 tie. The Buccaneers defense held their own against the quick Radford offense. ETSU sophomore goalkeeper Heather Sanden played the entire game and earned 17 saves on 29 shots by the Highlanders. Radford freshman Nikki Porter had five shots on the night with several very close to scoring. Also, Radford sophomore Debbie Leach had five shots with several being saved by Sanden. "Heather had an exceptional game," said head coach Heather Henson, "Her composure in the backfield kept us together as a unit." The Bucs offense had their share of close shots on goal. In the last minute of the second overtime period, senior forward Lisa Gallagher had a shot just miss the top of the net in an attempt to win. Gallagher and sophomore Andrea Brown led the team with four shots against Radford. East Tennessee shot the ball 14 times as a team. "They came together as a team," said Coach Henson, "They never gave up and the heart was there." The ETSU Buccaneer women's soccer team is on the road this weekend to take on South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C. at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2001. The Bucs return home to the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex on Friday, September 14, 2001 with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
