FT. MYERS, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2011) – The semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament await the ETSU women’s soccer team, as the Lady Bucs travel to the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. to take on No. 6-seeded Mercer on Friday, November 4, at 4 p.m.
ETSU (12-4-1, 7-1-1 A-Sun) heads into tournament play in the midst of its best season in program history, The Lady Bucs’ historic run has witnessed them tie the program record for wins, set the new program record for goals (43) and points (118) in a season, and win a share of their first A-Sun regular season championship.
The share of the regular season crown came Oct. 23, ETSU’s final game of the regular season, when the Lady Bucs came back from a goal down to defeat Mercer, 2-1. Sophomore Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) played the role of hero, scoring the game-winner in the 81st minute to clinch the crown and catapult ETSU into the A-Sun semifinals via its No. 2 seed.
With its first round bye, ETSU is playing in its first semifinal since 2007. In the ’07 tournament, the Lady Bucs defeated Stetson, 2-1, in the quarterfinals held in Kennesaw, Ga. to advance to their first ever A-Sun semifinal round.
Mercer (9-7-2, 3-5-1 A-Sun) enters the semifinals having defeated No. 3-seeded Jacksonville in penalty kicks, 4-2, last Friday in the quarters. The Bears gave up a goal early in the first half of that contest, but equalized in the beginning stages of the second half to take a, 1-1, draw to penalties.
Although the No. 6 seed, Mercer is still the defending A-Sun Tournament champions and will be looking for some revenge against ETSU after falling in the regular season finale. In that contest, Olivia Tucker, the Bears’ leading goal scorer, put Mercer up early with an 8th minute goal off a free kick from Patricia-Anne Upson before ETSU rallied for the win.
The other semifinal puts top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (12-4-2, 7-1-1 A-Sun) against the No. 5 seed in North Florida (9-9-2, 4-4-1 A-Sun). FGCU advanced to the semifinals with an opening round bye after earning the No. 1 seed over ETSU and JU in the head-to-head tiebreak. UNF had to play its way into the semis, and did so by defeating Belmont, 1-0, last Saturday. Katie Shafer scored the only goal of the contest, slipping a shot past Nicole Berner in the 37th minute as the Ospreys held on for the win.
ETSU combined for a 1-1-0 record in the regular season against UNF and FGCU, defeating the Ospreys, 2-1, on Oct. 7 before dropping its first conference game of 2011, 3-0, to the Eagles on Oct. 16.
