JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 21, 2004) - The Buccaneer women's soccer team fell to the Spartans at home in a grueling 5-0 decision at Liberty Bell Field. ETSU is now 5-6-3 overall, 2-3-3 in the SoCon, while UNCG's record stands at 10-4-1, 6-1-1.
In the first half both teams fought intensely for the early lead. The shots were fairly even in the half, ETSU made seven and UNCG made nine, but UNCG would find the back of the net first.
Deven Beachum scored first for the Spartans. Her first of two goals came at 12:19. Amy Carnell headed the ball to Beachum off a free kick by Rakel Logadottir for what would be the gamewinner.
Just 12 minutes later Beachum would cross the ball to Nicollette DeLaine who would find Carnell for UNCG's second goal, making the score 2-0 heading into the second half.
In the second, ETSU continued to fight, but the Spartans would score three more times before the end of the game with a 5-0 final.
Sarah Prendergast (Palm Bay, Fla.) made four saves in her time for the Bucs and falls to 2-3-1 and Christine Parks (Annapolis, Md.) made two. Their counterpart Jennifer Stillman made five saves for the Spartans and improves to 5-4-1 with the shut out.
"We battled hard against a very good team today," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "Our youth showed in defending the middle third and in our slowness to the attack. We need to focus and take care of the details in our last three."
The Buccaneers next match is set for Sunday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Bell against the Davidson Wildcats, while the Spartans will now travel to Statesboro, Ga. to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on the same day.
